Pete had his first catering job today, a breast cancer fair at a hospital south of where we live and where my mom happens to work. I spent yesterday doing prep and today setting up, plating, cooking and doing odd jobs.
In the last 48 hours my mom and I have peeled 40 pounds of potatoes.
Washed and cleaned 540 shrimp.
Threaded about 200, (I lost count, several times), colby jack cubes with strawberries on skewers.
Mixed grilled veggies with pasta and other top secret ingredients.
Pete had also done several other dishes but I think he saved the monotonous ones for me. Low man on the totem pole and all that.
You know that show Dinner:Impossible on Food Network? It was kind of like that. The facility we were at today had no actual kitchen. We were able to bring in a couple of portable burners, they got super hot but we kept overloading the circuit and blowing a fuse. It was awesome, at times hilarious and frustrating.
One of the drug reps sponsored a Cold Stone ice cream bar. I never ate anything while I was working but at the end I ran over and grabbed ice cream.
Just pay me in ice cream* and I am happy. And maybe some insoles for my shoes. My back and feet hurt.
*When I grabbed the ice cream all of the food was out and things were calm, I managed to snag 15 minutes in my moms office which happened to be in the same hall as our prep area.
